IGN Fallout 3: Six Hours of Exploration

This latest (and last for the week) article by IGN covers the writers six hour foray out into the world to explore. It goes on to describe many small details about traveling around the world map. A new video preview is tagged on.

Some things of note are invisible walls, Rivet City, and ghouls:
(Interesting side note: If you make it to the edge of the map, an invisible wall exists and text pops up telling you to turn back. )

Rivet City is an entire living complex built into the heart of a grounded aircraft carrier. It's got everything from a marketplace (where I found the Fat Boy nuke launcher for the first time) to a chapel and more. I only explored the city for about 30 minutes, but I was still able to find a good number of side quests. None were cooler than the one I found that involved the retrieval of the Declaration of Independence. America may have crumbled in the nuclear war, but that doesn't mean your patriotism had to.

Once inside Tenpenny Tower, I found out that the local law enforcement not only hates Roy Phillips, they want the whole cadre of ghouls dealt with. I, of course, accepted the quest and went in search of the entrance to the tunnels the ghouls live in. At the heart of the tunnel, after fighting numerous feral ghouls, you'll find Roy and his friends. You don't have to kill them, of course. If you decide to talk to them and befriend the troupe, you can go on a series of quests with some very cool rewards, according to Bethesda, that I won't spoil here.

A salute goes out to Ausir.

Hopefully it'll be balanced out by ammo being really expensive. A previous guy who got to play for six hours mentioned that even after all he'd done, he was only able to afford to buy one shell.

Edit: Though come to think of it, by your 20th hour you'll have enough money to toss away amounts equivalent to the 6th hour mark with no restraint.

    So...yeah, perhaps a bad move.

it's a stupid idea to begin with and you shouldn't be able to buy shells at all, at most there should be like 5 of them hidden in obscure areas or at the bottom of dungeons

You'd think that after nuclear weapons destroyed the world people would become somewhat less cavalier in their use..

There's no denying that around the 50's/60's it seemed like nuclear energy was the be-all end-all problem solver to everything that might be wrong with the world. Hell, kids could even buy little "nuclear scientist" kits complete with genuine uranium.

However, after the planet is engulfed in nuclear flame it seems reasonable to assume the love affair with the atom would end along with the world, but I guess not being able to launch nuclear grenades at two-headed cows wouldn't be the BethSoft way.. or something..

Decent little preview in my eyes. I thought the video was kind of uneventful, but the write up was interesting. I did enjoy that guy popping up on the black & white footage, and his enthusiasm, but other than that, that was about all I got out of it.

As for the text, I am happy to see that 'racial' tensions between humans and ghouls is still intact, as that was one of the more moving things I took away from the originals. Hopefully, as very briefly referred to in the last video, slavery is also still intact. I liked the moral choices involving both scenarios. I also like how it really seems you can wander anywhere, even if you're far from ready. I like that feel.

Yeah, despite the odd debacle that was the last video, I am back to being enthused again. Sure this thing will be far from perfect; I just hope it's fun. Again...at least Fallout: Tactics level.

I'm not really one of those against the Fatman; I don't really care since many times, even in 1 & 2 I wouldn't even use the plasma rifles or miniguns, sticking solely with items you might really find like the sawed-off shotgun and pistols. So...if I think the Fatman is silly, I just won't use it. I consider it more of the joke weapon than the teddy launcher thing. (I like the build-it-yourself weapons) Just don't make a bunch of super mutants use it on me, and all's well. But anyway...to go along with the expensive ammo comment above, someone did say (probably Todd) that although you may find a big time gun, you'll probably have a hell of a time finding ammo for it. Doubt it will be THAT scarce, but reminds me of that one gun of Gizmo's...a Mauser or something? I always hung onto it like a collector's item since I could never find ammo. I think this is fairly realistic since after a war, or whatever, you're going to have the actual guns lying around everywhere, broken or not, while ammo might be buried, deteriorated or whatever. "OMG! A Rocket Launcher!" (looks around) "...ok...no rockets... Maybe I can use it as a flower pot?"

EDIT: Haha, I just remembered in Mad Max 3 how the tribes people had that staff, and it took Max to pull it away, put a bullet in it being used as a decoration and show them it was a gun.

Oh, and after seeing that guy that wants to nuke Megaton again (sorry, forgot his name) I have a pleasant feeling that the voices will be much better than what I've heard about Oblivion, despite the few everyone seems very annoyed with. As long as they aren't like something out of Resident Evil (prays)...I'm OK.

Bethesda didn't want anyone to see the mutated, talking bunny rabbits that attack you at later levels.

Thanks for that "no new info" video ign reviewer guy. Also i was hoping ign would do a "neutral" preview of the game. Lets see there are 3 basic ways of playing through the game, Good, Bad, Neutral. Let's do an article on good, then an article on bad and then stop there...

    Just two notes:
Actual mini-nuclear weapon is not as stupid as it may seem - see Davy Crockett.

The name - Fat Man - is a must, with anything else you won't get "OMG nucular weapon liek in Japan" in previews.

The thing that strikes me is a term "feral ghoul" - doesn't make sense. Ghouls are no goblins / mass spawning creatures from Oblivion, they used to be human beings and (for good players ) still are. There is some racial tension, yes, but saying "killing feral ghouls" is the same as "killing some feral niggers". Where are the censors?

Could you guys please stop with the Davy Crockett bullshit ? Thanks.

Oh and btw, could someone explain why the nuke in Megaton has a Vault Tec logo on it ? I'd be really interested in hearing that.

Davy Crockett was long-range, the Fatman is ridiculously short-range.

It doesn't. The logo is a bit similar, but still different.

I think it's more a case that you kill feral ghouls because if you don't then they are going to kill you. More of a survival thing. Vanilla ghouls you will be able to interact with.

It's got everything from a marketplace (where I found the Fat Boy nuke launcher for the first time)
So you just stroll in and buy a nuclear crossbow and mini-nuclear bolts from a wasteland merchant........and there are actually some people who don't find this stupid?

We already knew this but since it's been brought up like once before, thought I'd highlight it's suckiness.

    ...
Seems that they plain lied to us about the Fat Man's rarity/difficulty to get (unless they only talked about the ammo)... Guess we'll just have to wait to see if they lied about how rare the ammo is.

That video is just ridiculous, it was a bloody ad no matter how you look at it.

Also just noticed that I could make the flamethrower, as seen from FPP, out of my shop vac attachments and some pipe cement. Considering how easy it is to make a decent looking flamethrower, that's pretty depressing...

If you read the article properly, at no point does it say that you can buy ammo for the fatman at the market.

What part of buying a (the?) Fat Man in a market makes sense? I can also assure you that you will be able to buy at least one shot for it when you buy it, especially considering their talk about letting the player try out all of the cool weapons early in the game.

But it also doesn't say that you can't buy ammo for the Fatman
