    Fallout 3 video interview

G4 X-Play has an interview with Todd Howard, at PAX.
Adam Sessler: What are you noticing in people's reactions, in how they're playing the game that is surprising you?

Todd Howard: I guess I'm not surprised at how much they like the violence, y'know, they go right for it. People like to see the dialogues - we haven't showed a lot of it, so they like to go to Megaton, go around and see the different personalities. But once we tell them - y'know, they only have ten minutes - so if they go to Megaton and we tell them "hey, you only got a few minutes left" they start shooting the first person in front of them. Y'know, nice old ladies, and they just go BAM, they start going for it.

Adam Sessler: What happens in that town when that happens?

Todd Howard: Everybody goes crazy on you, starts shooting you, so you have to - it's a tough combat situation, so most people here just die or run out of town with bullets flying.

It's an attempt at humor on Todd's part I guess....but, no. Just no.

Are there really little old ladies in Megaton?

Also, his description of the town reaction makes it sound like one of those stupid AI scripts "the guards magically know you did something wrong". I hope that's just him using the easiest choice of words, tho', and what he means is that everyone within earshot comes to check it out and then becomes angry.

I doubt it tho'. AI has never been Bethesda's forte.

If you open fire in the middle of a town then it SHOULD go pretty nuts on you. Most of the residents should flee though...

Everyone in Oblivion is a fighter. Go figure. Hopefully it will be different in Fallout 3, but.. I don't expect much of them. If they say otherwise then they're probably just lying.

If you shoot all the witnesses in the first few seconds, hide the gun, then move away (or even better, pretend to be a townsperson running away from the murderer), who's going to know?

It does sound like you shoot lady = Megaton NPC tag goes Hostile. If that's true... heck, even BG games did better than that.

As somebody who has seen people get shot on the street corner.

Everybody in 3 blocks is going to know what happened.

Uh, really? I used to live in a pretty bad neighbourhood, in the span that I lived there ('bout 8 years) there were three shootings in the same street I lived in. One I can't recall the details of, one was a ring-the-bell-shoot-the-guy thing (something to do with drugs) one was a drive by in front of a store.

Somehow, I never instantly magically knew what happened until at least day later. Let alone who did it. Let alone wanting to kill the person who did it.

well, you also don't live in a post-apoc town and have a gun. i'd assume the townspeople are used to fending off raiders and a good deal of them would have guns. also, i recall in fo/fo2 when you killed someone in the middle of the street for no good reason, it would make the town hostile against you. now, not everyone attacked instantly of course, some of them (like children) would run. now that i think of it though, that also would depend on the town. not all towns gave a shit.

anyways, shooting an old lady point blank for no reason is dumb, and if it's in the open, i'd be upset if there was no reaction from the npcs. i mean, fuck, at least snipe the bitch!

Fan-flipping tastic. That is relevant to the point how, exactly? Or are you just trying to out bad-neighbourhood me?

I would assume that living in a post-apocalyptic town would make you a survivor before anything else: the logic "hey, he shot someone I barely know, I'm going to kill him" won't cut it for most people, "hey, the dude is a murderer, I'm getting the fuck out" will be closer to home.

But this is all just assuming. If it's as bad as it was in Oblivion I will laugh at Bethesda as I do over so many topics, but perhaps they improved it (and no, I don't actually believe they did, but hey, always a chance)

This could quickly become a string of Rodney Dangerfield-esque jokes. "Back in the old neighborhood it was rough... I tell ya, don't get me started..."

Something of a mixture would even be believable. But everyone, even old ladies, jumping into some giant brawl (BAM! as Todd would put it) instead of high-tailing it away from the danger? That's just plain stupid and nonsensical. Actually, no. It's new and improved extra-stupid and nonsensical.

Probably somewhere in the area of the chance that you'll wake up tomorrow on Mars and be able to survive there and then get a message from Earth that you just won a few multi-million dollar lotteries with a P.S. that true world peace and complete harmony among people was just established. Well, maybe a little less than that chance.

I know I harp on Bethesda, but they make it so damn inviting to do when they refuse to learn a lesson about anything or even acknowledge a mistake unless it's screamed directly at their faces for about 3 years. And then they go insane to show what they've 'learned' and take the problem to the opposite extreme.

I have to agree with evil on this one. If all the able bodied men attacked while the children and most the women ran I would be happy. But to assume that everyone should run away is short sighted. (or everyone opens fire) I would expect a fast deadly response to any hostile action in a frontier town. Think wild west mentality here. A guy walks into a salon and shoots the bartender. Piano player, the local madam, three guys playing poker all draw and shoot new guy down.

I do think Tod is a tool throughout most of the video however. I mean he just stood there with his hands in his pockets responding in a mostly monotone voice with absolutely no enthusiasm. I did smile when he mentioned X-plays review of Oblivion and that they added dialog and reactions from npcs because of it.

Yeah, it would be really funny if the final release of Fallout 3's difficulty is insanely difficult at the start of the game, as opposed to Oblivion where it starts out easy.

Like you step out of the vault, and there's a super mutant behemoth. "Rawrrr!" *smack!* And then you die.

So that's where Bethesda voice actors get their inspiration from.

Going to go ahead and agree with these to since they make a better case of why the villiagers would get pissed

As for the interview, Todd's speaking skills are somewhat lacking, and I think he probably got stuffed in a few lockers along the way. Also, pointing out how retarded the radiant AI in Oblivion was isn't "nitpicking," it's "doing your job."

Bethesda shouldn't let this guy speak in public, methinks.

I bet all the posters on NMA are manly men and not geeky or nerdy at all. Bullies would run scared from your bulging muscles and you all probably had sex when you were, like, 8, right?

My point being, laying into a guy for the way he speaks or looks isn't particularly clever or funny, nor does it have much to do with Fallout.

If someone's had sex at 8 then that doesn't make them a man, that makes them a man with psychological problems. My recommendation is (for them) to go see a therapist.

As for people putting Todd down.. it would be funny to see him stuff THEM into a locker. It's my firm belief that most people who spend any amount of substantial time on the internet are lying about their perfect physique, knowledge of martial arts, and their illegal gun collection.
