    Fallout 3 at PAX: Joystiq

Joystiq tries out Fallout 3 and talks with Emil Pagliarulo.
That said, you don't have to kill anything to beat the game. Almost. Said Pagliarulo, "I don't want to make a blanket statement and say entire game, but a good part of it, several portions." He said one tester beat the game by killing only the rat roach at the beginning. Protip: If you go this route, raise your sneak and science skills -- let other people fight for you and hire mercenaries.
    (...)
    # The team went back and forth on the concept of karma (i.e. the measure of good vs. evil), ultimately deciding to consider it a universal force, meaning no one has to see you be evil to affect your karma. You can still commit crimes without getting caught, however.
    # We were able to try picking locks using a bobby pin and a screwdriver. Unlike Oblivion, you can't pick every lock with a low-skilled character. According to Pagliarulo, a higher skill level is required for some of the necessary tools.
    Thanks Incognito.

Well, at least the protip is better than "shoot it till it dies".

But i'm not sure i count getting other people to do the killing as a pacafist option really.

I can see it now, "Protip: To defeat the Supermutant Behemoth, shoot at it until it dies."

I wish I had mad photoshop skills.

isn't that part of the pacifist path in the earlier games though?

Hiring people to kill other people? No, that's not a part of the pacifist path for the most part. I guess you could count some things like that, such as getting the Blades to fight the guys in Adytum or getting the enclave soldiers to go toe-to-toe with Horrigan.

It's a fairly sensible part of the pacifist path, I think.

They say this time they went the evil way and blew Megaton up. This time? Has anyone that played the game disarmed the bomb instead of blowing it? I'm starting to think that this is a cover up and that there is no option to disarm the bomb, they just don't want to say it.

of course there's an option to go the other way, but Bethesda wants to show the "cool" way of doing that quest and since they've hyped it so much it's no wonder every journalist who gets to play the game decides to do it as well. hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Bethesda asked them to do it too.

Does that qualify as a pacifist? I think having your mercs kill everything on sight for you sort of defeats the purpose.

EDIT: Just read BN's post, and though I suppose in some instances it may be acceptable, just having your NPCs do the fighting whenever it arises still kills it, methinks.

I'd just like to say that I called it . It's a little rough around the edges though (literally), since I unfortunately got no photoshop skills whatsoever.

While "cover up" is stretching it, I certainly find it odd how previews show very little of the player choice and non-linearity the game supposedly built around. "Sure, there's lots of ways to solve quests. Now here's some more footage of bloody mess in glorious slo-mo action!"

If you've blown up the military base and the cathedral and then consider yourself to be a pacifist...

Yeah.. you've got a few marbles missing.

Being a pacifist and being someone who doesn't like to get their hands dirty is two totally different things.

Even blowing up the entrance to the radscrorpion caves is pretty violent.

So yeah.. just because your character is a total wimp and can't really kill anything, they're no pacifist. They just suck and you picked poorly when you picked skills. haha

    From the interview:
"On the topic of sex. "We haven't pushed the limits with sex," said Pagliarulo. "We found that the whole adult content thing, we knew we'd have crazy over-the-top violence and have kids in the game, and dealing with attacking them." Pagliarulo cited Mass Effect as a game where it was important to the story. In Fallout 3, he said, he didn't want to make sex "a joke and cheesy," much like excessive profanity (a lot was cut out, apparently). "The closest you come to any of that is renting a room and [a woman] sleeps next to you. It's implication." That happens for either gender."

Nice and kudos to them if they really managed to portray the "adult" content with the... innocence(?) of the times lost in the past, contrary to current & cheap sex! ganz! drama is sleeping with every mamal in the cast! way.
However do i get it wrong or did he say/mean they cut out the excessive profanity they displayed? (Or was he giving it as an example... thou i cant understand how you can have more of it except using it as punctuation...)

I think he meant that he cut out a lot of profanity from the game, about half of it, because he thought it was forced. I read this in another preview, someone else may link you to it, I forgot which one it was.

I'm not a master at English and so i might have streched what i wanted to say. What i really meant to say was that its strange that in every preview you see out there they always choose the evil part of blowing up megaton, and althought has someone said the option to disarm the bomb is in a video, but you never see him use it. With the number of gameplay videos increasing you should at least find one where you could see what happened if you saved megaton. Its like they don't want to show what happens if you blow up megaton because (maybe, just maybe) there will be no consequences of it and karma lowering. If that would be true you could see 100% that the game has no moral consequences. And that would lower the income on the sales of the game because fallout should have moral consequences and this one has not. (My imagination is kicking in, i better stop writhing because if i continue no telling where ill end with this).

Getting factions to kill eachother and hiring mercs to do all the killing while you sit back are two very different things. If combat has to take place between your forces and theirs then it's not a different path. Are random encounters a tricky thing? Yeah and we can ignore them to some degree (though having ways besides doing combat with them or having others do combat with them for you would be a plus) for a non-combat path in the game. The question is whether or not there is forced combat for all of the main story quests or whether there is a non-combat solution for all of them. The impression I get is that you will be forced into combat for the main quest which requires you or your companions to shoot them dead, that is not a non-combat path.

I have to agree that it sucks that no one seems to play through the "good" Megaton path and it just makes all of the previews blend together. There has been one guy to do it (the guy with the house and robot butler) and there really wasn't much meat in his preview.

It's less about being an actual pacifist and more about not having to invest in combat skills.

Some interesting things they could do would be to carry a flag (meaning you wish to parlay with said raider who is approaching you with a gun) or even use something to disguise your scent so that certain animals and/or creatures will ignore you.

The stealthboy should just about cover that area though.
