Platform nation audio interview with Todd Howard

On the Platform Nation special PAX podcast, they managed to get an interview with Todd Howard. One of the new pieces of info is that during Speed Runs of the game, people in the Bethesda Offices have managed to beat the game in only an hour and thirty minutes. Other than that:
(...) We hear a lot of complaining about [switches to nasal, whiny tone] this isn't Fallout, man, you've changed our game, what do you...

[Todd interrupting] I don't think they use that tone of voice.

    (laughing, joking)

Did that ever enter your mind: how are we going to not going to alienate the hardcore Fallout fans.

Well, we had a good idea of what we wanted to do with it, so we were pretty sure we were going to get it full bore. 'cause we knew we were going to make some changes that we thought would make a more fun game, but I think you take those risks and with anything - like Fallout - that has such a big following and is such a classic I think you have to be ready to get some of that. I think a lot of those people actually, if you read through some of the language they use, the things they care about are things we care about, making choices, being able to roleplay, talking to people and I think that because of the way the game is presented - it comes across as a big first person gorefest - that it gets lost that that stuff is in the game. You kind of just tell them that hey, look, we're big Fallout fans too, we didn't spend 4 years of our lives and millions and millions of dollars on this game because we want to fuck it up, right, we really like it, we wanted to make this game. The things people like about Fallout - we feel - are in it.
Say what you want about Bethesda, but even when openly baited by journalists they refuse to take cheap shots at the (hardcore) community. Some journalists could really learn a lesson in professional behaviour from that.

Nice going avoiding mention of pen and paper emulation in the list of things people - including the original developers - list as liking in Fallout there, tho'.

No problem, if someone could post this on the Front Page though, that would be nice, because I know most of the hits for NMA are on the Front page; not everyone visits the forums.

My post was deleted, but erm, if you listen to the podcast, that's exactly what was said.

At around 5 minutes, they just start speaking about Vaginas.

And at 9 minutes, DO NOT listen to it if you're a hardcore fallout fan, seriously.

Oh, yeah, they do...sorry about that. I forgot to mention it's a bit explicit. It was totally worth making Todd feel completely uncomfortable though.

    No problem Brother None.

At around 24mins, I quite like what he said.

That there aren't gateways in the main quest. So you can get information regarding the main quest which isn't in a sequence. From what I heard, I think it means you can find pieces of information which will help you advance the plot, without actually going to person X and him telling you "Go to this location". So finding information by chance, or, since Todd and Co know where everything is in the game, they went in search for that directly.

I think this makes sense, much more realistic.

EDIT: But the interviewee is very annoying. Very. Especially saying "Ooo I love teddybears" and shit. Now I don't mind that teddy thing in the game, I doubt I'll make the Rock-It weapon anyway, but the way she got excited about this, *sigh*, it was silly.

    Thanks for the tip.

Bethesda doesn't like us much, but I do always appreciate how they manage to stay professional even when journalists can not.

Typical of gaming journalism, this kind of nonsense.

Not going to listen to it otherwise. I f'ing hate podcasts and audio interviews. And considering the little professionalism gaming journos have normally goes right out the window on this kind of nonsense, who can blame me.

EDIT: my criticizing of professionalism wasn't a lead-in for personal attacks, guys. Criticize their professional attitude, talk podcasts in general, whatever, but don't go for the "what an idiot", "what a bitch" or whatever bullshit. Already vatted two posts and I'll vat more. Criticise, but don't get personal.

My opinion of that is the same as the other 2 posts which got Vatt'ed. I appreciated that Todd was quite professional in the way he did not laugh at them.

And I'm not a hardcore fan, but, those cheap laughs were annoying. Really annoying, and childish.

Sorry, I don't often get personal like that.

    Kudos for Howard's professionalism though

I'm getting really sick of these "journalists" trying to play "cool" when referencing the hard core fans.

90% of them probably haven't even had a discussion with one..

Well they pretty much hold hard core gamers in contempt, not going along with the 'flow'.
But on their turn most hard core gamers hold game journalists in contempt, being much to eager to sell their integrity.

Perhaps if they didn't blatantly ignore flaws, and actually provide some nonbiased reviews, perhaps the perception hard core gamers had would be moderated.

I know, I know, preaching to the choir.

I think the problem is that many gaming journalists have gotten the idea that they're entertainers and thus don't need to be professional or all that well informed, especially in audio and video interviews. I don't know what started it but I can't help thinking that Penny Arcade might have been a contributing factor to this trend...

Also, I'm not so sure about Bethesda being staying all that professional all the time, they occasionally go off on stints where they decide to drop the f-bomb multiple times in an interview for no discernable reason, but otherwise I agree.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was a planted question but I'll give Todd credit for standing up for the fans who are critical and are not going to be a huge revenue source.

From what I can tell from the posts and the OP, the interview sounds extremely poor and I loathe listening to Todd (his voice just makes me want to hit someone).

Well, kudos to Todd on that one. He clearly knows we actually all have deep, rich basso voices which we use to 'whine'.

I find it quite funny that they obviously were trying to jump into bed with Bethesda there with that swipe at Fallout fans, and it kind of got thrown back in their faces and with some actual professionalism at that. Like watching some over-confident horndog strike out at what they perceive to be a singles bar really.

They'll probably just get it out of their systems with whatever is going to be the M'aiq character in this game.

From all the people's voices in this podcast, Todd's voice was the only one that didn't annoy me to death (and I usually really don't like his voice either).
It really made my head hurt listen to those....people.And I liked some of his answers, although I am not entirely sure about that having a house and decorate it thing, but at least you can not buy it...

I also hate how little imagination those people have, first asking about bullshit like achievements (who cares ) or DLC....why didnt they ask him why don't they hire more animators? why wont they make facial animations that would match 4 years old Bloodlines?

I tell you why. Because asking a real question is out the window. To much hard work.

I read a helluva lot of interviews....and it seems to be all the rage with these people today to ask the meaningless powder puff questions like achievements or Teddys are great what about BUNNIES!

YES BUNNIES OF DEATH THAT CAUSE A PERSON TO RIP APART AT THE JOINTS!!!!(with the help if Bloody mess)

un-Professionalism is the norm these days. When you do Work do have assed and on drugs.

There are really no standards in game journalism today. 2 years of community college and an Xbox does not make you a game journalist. The quality levels are all over the place. For instance, Kotaku is basically a blog, but I personally think that the "journalists" there are of higher quality than some "proper" sites. The real problem today has been said well by Lazlow: "Blogging is a hobby, journalism is a profession." When journalists begin to act like bloggers, the professionalism ends.

In my opinion, this interview showcases what Bethesda is best at: P.R. I might not like SOME their games, but if they were a P.R. company I would hire them at any cost. He held his ground and acted professional in the midst of childish buffoons. That my friends, is a achievement unlocked.

EDIT: I've listen to a little bit more and I can say I don't recommend listening to it. At one point a mouth-breathing Halo shoota comes by and says "I DON'T LEIK RPGS. CAN I JUST SHOOT TEH GUNS? I DON'T WANT TO EXERT ANY EFFORT!" I raged hard.
