Fallout 2 Coop? by Odin - 8:22 - Comment Me (1) - News Source: Duck And Cover Forums
I noticed that TeamX had posted something about Fallout 2, I tried to translate it but it didn't come out quite right (go figure!). But it seems Saint had gotten word from ApTyp about it and it seems there's a way to play Fallout 2 cooperatively (not without problems of course), here goes:
JFalc, the new member of community, and Dims (the guy who works on the mapper) found this:
In order to play Fallout in LAN with 2 players using the same cached resources, you have to:
a: Map Network Drive is checked on all computers
b: fallout2.cfg is checked to make sure all paths are correct
2) if one player leaves something on the map then exits it, then that stuff becomes accessible to anotherplayer.
Who can take it.
3) Completed quests are checked for all players.
Regardless of who actually completed them.
4) NPCs, if left in one location, can't be taken by another player.
The game hangs up if you try.
You can kill them, though.
Also, you can't 'clone' your NPCs this way, meaning:
if you have Vik and Sulik and if, for example, you enter Klammath where another player already left thesetwo guys, then your NPCs automatically leave your team and stay on the map as if they were generic critters.

That's basically it. The trick here is the sharing of cached resources. Naturally, you WON'T see another player if he's on the same map.
OOh, quite a trick to try out....

Fallout Bible... by Odin - 18:12 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: BIS Forum
According to Chris Avellone we can expect the next Fallout Bible update after IWD2 ships, as you can guess Chris Avellone is quite busy working on IWD2..
Specifics on the EPA will be in the next Bible update (look for it after IWD2 ships). It wasn't much more than 5-6 pages of design documentation, though.
So there you have it guys...

Devestation Preview by Odin - 17:39 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: Gamespy
Gamespy posted a preview of the Post-Apocalyptic FPS called "Devestation", and here are some fuicy bits:
Devastation is set in a post-apocalyptic world that's common to many gritty FPS games. A hundred years in the future, it pits a group of street-wise cyberpunk "disloyalists" battling to take down the police state that has been formed by government and corporations. In the process of playing the game, the story unfolds, revealing the threat of continued tyranny, danger at the hands of "pacification squads" (more or less, the police or military forces) and the discovery of a plot involving cloning. Each level introduces new characters and new skills that can be used.
Sounds good, and there's more:
The 20 single-player levels advance the story, and offer more than run-and-gun combat. For instance, some of the items offered are tools help accomplish tasks, such as hacking a computer. And while muscles and firepower are often a benefit, some Deus Ex-like stealth may be a good first tactic in some scenarios. NPCs will be equipped with strong AI to make them more aware of their surroundings, and the sound from a rushed plan may trigger them into action toward the player's early demise.
Gimme, Gimme..... read the whole story here.

Day of the Mutants Screenies by Odin - 16:40 - Comment Me (2) - News Source: Gamespot
Remember the other Post-Apocalyptic FPS I reported about earlier, well Gamespot has some screenshots of it. Looks quite Fallouty, except for the mutants...
Here's some of the good stuff about the game:
The goal of the game is to merely survive in the hostile world filled with bloodthirsty mutants and radioactive rain. To this end, players will have to find food, fuel, ammunition, and weapons, but they won't be able to carry everything they find due to the limited space in their backpack. To survive, they will have to find the right balance of equipment, weapons, and supplies.
Makes it a little more RPG feel than a normal FPS...

Rumours in Magazine etc.. by Odin - 15:03 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: BIS Forums
If you've ever seen an ad for Fallout 3 on a webshop, PC magazine or anything else, you've probably thought to yourself that this game might be in development. Well that doesn't have to be the case, I'll let Chris Avellone explain:
If you haven't seen it in a press release, you can pretty much safely assume it's bullshit. We get questions all the time from people who see it advertised on web sites and in magazines, and even prominent magazines and web sites have messed it up from time to time.
Makes it all that easier doesn't it...

BIS Projects by Odin - 14:59 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: Bis Forums
I guess you're all confused as I am about these names for the different projects BIS/Interplay is working on or planning, well look no further because JE clarified things:
Feargus called Lionheart/Fallout Fantasy (LOLZ ROOFLE!1!) "Quincy" because he forgot that my goofy little naming convention only applied to in-house titles.

King - Stonekeep II (the king is dead)
Washington - Torn (or TORN, if you're eXtreeeeme)
Adams - Heart of Winter
Jefferson - MYSTAREY
Monroe - Icewind Dale II
Quincy - Lionheart (we can ignore this faux-pas)

The logical questions are: what is Jefferson, what is Jackson, and what is Van Buren?

Jefferson is actually in development right now. Doug previously stated that what it is would surprise a lot of people. I don't necessarily think that. I think it will surprise some people, anger some people, and make some other people happy. WOW, HOW INFORMATIVE. However, as is becoming painfully obvious, BIS fans are four horses that draw and quarter us no matter what we do. If we appease the left leg horse, the right shoulder horse gets mad and rips our arm off. Anyway, moving right along...

Jackson and Van Buren are titles that we've talked about making. They aren't in development. They have no teams, are not Interplay-approved, and may never be. WHOOPIE!
Now, I'd expect that Jefferson isn't Fallout 3...but.....

Update: Chris Avellone has previously said that Fallout 3 isn't in development and now he says:
PST2 is not in production, and it does not involve the Nameless One.
So what does that leave us with ?

The Wastes contest by Odin - 14:50 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: The Wastes
The guys over at The Wastes are having a contest, lookie here:
Think of this as a bit of a contest, the winner will get a signed box of Tony Hawk 3 for the PC from yours truly. We need someone to do an updated version of Theodus and Idaho. Get your motors running and make some goodies! In a matter of a month we'll see which ones we as a team like the best and the winner (in the case of a seperate skinner/modeler team, we'll offer up a secondary prize for the skinner, most likely another box of Tony Hawk 3 for the PC) will get his name in the credits, his characters in the game and the afore mentioned prizes! Feel free to post progress pics! Have fun!
So get on and model and skinn those Characters..

GameSpy: The new game Lionheart uses the Fallout SPECIAL system. There are many Fallout fans out there that are hoping for a new Fallout game so you think you'll ever do one?

Interplay money stuff by Odin - 9:43 - Comment Me (9) - News Source: Vault13
Saint noticed some interesting stuff about Interplay and their money troubles at Gamasutra, lookie here:
Last week Interplay reported its operating results for Q1 2002, posting its first profitable quarter since Q3 2000. For the first quarter ended March 31, 2002, the company reported net income of $1.5 million, (2 cents per share), compared to a net loss of $8.4 million (30 cents per share), in the same period last year. Net revenues were down 9%, to $15.4 million.

The company also announced it has applied to be moved to the Nasdaq SmallCap market. In accordance with its February 15 deficiency notice from Nasdaq, Interplay acknowledged it has not met, among other Nasdaq requirements, the minimum bid price of $1.

Despite the positive news, and the recent sale of Shiny to Infogrames for $47 million, the company's future is far from secure. According to its lastest 10-Q form filed with the SEC, as of March 31, 2002, the company's cash balance was $61,000 and its outstanding accounts payable and current debt totaled $54 million. The company stated that even with the proceeds from Shiny's sale, it will need to raise additional financing. If not, the company said it may have to liquidate assets, declare bankruptcy.

As a result, Interplay is aggressively trying to raise capital. On April 26, 2002, the company sold to Titus (its majority shareholder) all rights, title and interest in Shiny's games EarthWorm Jim, Messiah, Wild 9, R/C Stunt Copter, Sacrifice, MDK, MDK II, and Kingpin, and Titus licensed the rights to develop, publish, manufacture and distribute the games Hunter I, Hunter II, Icewind Dale I, Icewind Dale II, and BG: Dark Alliance II for Game Boy Advance. Titus bought all these licenses for a total of $3.5 million.
Ouch, hopefully Interplay will sell big on IWD2 and Lionhead and then start Fallout 3 (after IWD2)....

Yet another Post Apocalyptic FPS by Odin - 10:51 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: Avault
A company called Techland is developing a game called "Day of the Mutants", it's a first-person shooter with a post-apocalyptic theme. Here's some more info:
"Survival is the only goal in a post-apocalyptic world full of blood-thirsty mutants. But shooting fast and accurately is not enough to stay alive. Every day is an endless search for food, fuel, weapons and ammunition. Every new dawn brings new dangers. Adequate survival strategies become increasingly important. Where to look for food and fuel? What is worth keeping and what is useless junk? Which weapon is best for piling dead mutants at your feet? Where to find a shelter before radioactive rain falls? You are not a hero. You are not a hunter. You are their prey. Survive - if you can - and do not let them eat you alive."

The game will feature over 20 locations spread across 50 square miles of ruined land. Players will be able to use 35 different guns and over 40 pieces of equipment while exploring radioactive deserts and slaughtering countless mutants.
Sounds like fun, and in this game we can smack some mutants around...

Fallout Fantasy by Odin - 8:45 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: Lionheart website
Hehe...I found this little baby:
Q: Is that game that was rumored to be Fallout Fantasy?
A: Lionheart's temporary name was in fact Fallout Fantasy. So it was quite amusing to us when it was rumored to be a hack-n-slash PS2 game set in a post apocolyptic world with spells. It was called Fallout Fantasy just because that was a simple title that implied it used the SPECIAL system in a medieval setting. The presidential naming system was put in place by JE and only refers to titles developed in-house.
Now where did that PS2 title go ?

Lionheart announced by Odin - 8:41 - Comment Me (7) - News Source: Black Isle
The unannounced project Interplay/Black Isle was working on is called "Lionheart" (reminds me of a movie...), here's the story:
It is 1588 A.D., a critical year of an alternate history hauntingly familiar yet fantastically alien to our own. Because of one fateful event during the Third Crusade, the history of this world diverged. This event, the Disjunction, ripped open a long-sealed breach to other worlds. Magic energy and powerful spirits flowed into the world, changing the lands and the people forever. For those who could comprehend the nature of these new forces, the introduction of magic brought great power. To the common folk, magic was something to be feared and undoubtedly the handiwork of evil demons. People across Europe sought protection from the forces of evil and therefore relinquished utter control of their lives to the Inquisition. To this day, the Inquisition still governs most of civilized Europe, directly or indirectly. In their relentless hunt for heretical wizards and magical creatures the Inquisition inspires awe and faith among many, and is dispised and feared by others. This widespread disparity, continued suspicion of wizards and witches and all things magical, and the constant threat from all manner of beasts cast a shadow over civilization, stunting the Renaissance and keeping the people in an enduring Dark Age.

Cast into this world, you are a character of your own devices, strengths, and abilities. Set upon by human factions and powerful spirits, you must decide how to best develop your skills in order to triumph over obstacles that lie between you and your true fate.
And some of the features:
  • Incredible story taking place on a historical divergent Earth during what should be the renaissance after a mystical cataclysm has occurred.

  • SPECIAL rules system (from Fallout 1 & 2) adapted to a real-time fantasy setting - including 30 skills, 40 perks, and 15 traits.

  • Classless system allows the user to customize their character however they want as they advance to as high as 60th level.

  • Eight major areas of the world contain over 80 levels that range from pure story and dialogue areas to pure combat challenges.

  • Fast paced combat in a rich and detailed world where dialogue interaction and story play equally large roles.

  • Characters in the world that can join your party and fight for and with you.

  • Cooperative multi-player allows as many as four friends to play through the single player game.

  • A random item generator allows the player to find literally thousands of different weapons and items.

  • Beautiful 2D rendered backgrounds with 3D characters allows for maximum beauty and frame rate.

  • Four different player races.

  • Over fifty enemies to challenge your combat and spell-casting abilities.

  • Over thirty spells that evolve and grow with as your characters' abilities increase.

  • Simple and intuitive gameplay with a clean interface.
  • Blargh, wasn't quite what I hoped for but then again I never believed BIS was working on FO3.. Wonder what's with the Diablo font in the game...

    New Post-Apocalyptic Team-FPS game by Odin - 14:42 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: Gamespy
Evidently ARUSH Entertainment, Groove Games and Digitalo announced a game called "Devestation", which is:
"set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, Devastation pits teams of rebelling gang leaders, street fighters, mercenaries, and ex-military operatives against armies of corrupt, high-tech corporate police in a battle to win control of a devastated world."
And here are some tech info:
The game not only uses next-generation Unreal technology, but it also incorporates real-world physics, providing for realistic object movements and incredible rag-doll deaths. The environment is completely interactive, where everything can be destroyed or manipulated-use garbage in the streets to set traps, or pick up broken bottles and slash your enemies. The use of sound in the game is dynamic as well--it can be manipulated or muffled to create diversions or to move around stealthily.
Sound like it could be some fun..

More Rumours by Odin - 9:00 - Comment Me (5) - News Source: Bis Forums
A guy calling himself "slig21" posted this little info, which is according to slig21 taken from the PC Gamer website (I couldn't find it though and he hasn't posted any links yet):
Having been rumoured for some time, unconfirmed information about the existence of a third game in the Fallout RPG series reared its head on the Internet earlier in the week. This next title, which it is said will be developed by Black Isle Studios, is apparently going by the name of Fallout Fantasy.
Needless to say, we wanted to find out if there was any truth behind the rumour, so we gave Virgin Interactive a call. Little did we know, however, that the Black Isle Studios title publisher was about to give us a rather large surprise.

"We can confirm that Black Isle Studios is working on a new Fallout title, although we are unable to comment on the name at this time," a spokesperson told us. Suddenly we heard the distant rumble of drums, rising steadily to an Earth-shattering crescendo - nobody's ever beaten their sticks for our benefit before - as we were struck dumb by truly uplifting words that floated gently into our ears: "In fact, Black Isle is working on two Fallout games currently." Yes folks! There're two! Somebody's obviously been popping the power pills...

While happy to excitedly leap up and down with us in syncopating rhythm over this news, our spokesperson was sadly unable to give us any specific gameplay details on either title. He did say, though, that an official announcement would be coming soon.

With two as yet un-named games based on the Fallout franchise on the way (apparently the name "Fantasy" is just that after all), it's quite possible that at least one of them will diverge from the traditional gameplay set out by the first two titles. We shall have to wait and see.
Well, untill we see that the PC Gamer people have posted this, I wouldn't believe it that much..

Another FO2 secret by Odin - 14:44 - Comment Me (5) - News Source: Bis Forums
Chris A posted this little baby on the BIS Forums, it seems there's tons of stuff in Fallout I didn't know exsisted:
Ever wanted to be Captain of the Guard in Vault City? Well, it's simpler than it sounds. Ideally, Lynette is set up so that if you kiss her butt completely, your ability to give her ass a swirl is rewarded by making you Captain of the Guard.

If you're willing to buckle up and walk the dialogue minefield, you'll need the following things:

     Speech >= 75% AND a CHR > 7.
Be able to speak to Lynette, the First Citizen of Vault City, without killing her. No small task.
Choose every response that addresses her as "First Citizen," including "Bye" responses.
Stop the raiders, show Lynette the account book you got from the raiders AND Bishop's holodisk detailing his affairs with NCR (located in Bishop's personal safe in New Reno), and then deliver the disk to Westin in NCR.
When you get back, mission accomplished, if her respect for you is high enough, she awards you Captain of the Guard status.
You will notice most of the Vault City citizen dialogues will change, especially Sergeant Stark, who will be none too pleased with your promotion. Take Cassidy with you to Stark for more hi-jinks and a little more XP if you confront Stark on busting up Cassidy's bar.

The best way to insure Lynette's RESPECT COUNTER for you is high enough is to find a loop in the dialogue where you can continually address her as First Citizen - after becoming a Citizen, the best way to do it is to keep asking her about Vault 13 (if you haven't found it), choosing the response of: "First Citizen, its very important to me that I find the location of my ancestors Vault. If I may check the archives, I would be grateful." Loop it ten to fifteen times to be sure (you need at least a level 10 - I do it fifteen times to be sure), then just be sure not to anger her after that.

One final word, if you want to become Captain of the Guard, do NOT keep stopping by to talk to her if you are not a Citizen. This... irritates Lynette. Every instance of this should lower her respect for you by 1.
    Sounds snazzy!

Interplay and a Haircut, Two Bits: by Rosh - 9:52 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: V13
Yahoo has an article of the finalized sale of Shiny to Infogrames, Inc., now the former of Interplay that has been rumored to have the highest salary cost of any Interplay division.

Possibly good news for Interplay, as this gives them a bit more money to work with, at about 47 million, including cold cash and a promissory note. That is, after whatever debts to hopefully pay off first.

On a related note, just about the time the deal was set into stone, took a nosedive to around 26 cents a share. With the NASDAQ de-listing just over the horizon if they fail to meet the $1 a share mark, things are looking quite grim.
