Shiny Sale goes to Infogrames by Odin - 14:38 - Comment Me (4) - News Source: Yahoo
It seems Infogrames is the company that is going to buy Shiny off Interplay's back, and it looks like they will be giving "approximately $47 million for Shiny Entertainment in a combination of cash and a promissory note.". Read the whole story here.

Fallout mod for Dungeon Siege by Odin - 10:37 - Comment Me (3) - News Source: Duck And Cover Forums
I was meaning to post this two days ago, but I wasn't in a good state so I decided not to. Anyways a guys called Darkness40k on the old DAC forums are starting a Fallout mod for Dungeon Siege, here's some info:
Ok I'm starting a mod of Dungeon Siege based on the Fallout world (and hoping interplay does not come after my blood).

The idea is to bring the world role play style, and gore of Fallout into the siege engine.

Temperary website (due to it being on another planet lol, come planetfallout host me :P):

Check out the site, let me know if any one thinks this is a good idea.

At the moment there is only me, mapper, 3D modeller, and novice scripter. But I have a few promises of help from very good coders, so the project looks good to get under way in a few weeks, as the editors are released.
Sound good ? hell yeah!

Story and world creation by Odin - 10:21 - Comment Me (2) - News Source: Bis Forums
Chris Avellone answered a question about how one becomes a story and world creator for Interplay, well here's what Chris A had to say:
1. A love of RPGs.

2. A critical eye for RPGs (and preferably, other games as well), including feel, interface, pacing, weapon balance, level design, and so on. Play a lot of them and be able to tell what you like and don't about each game. The more specific, the better.

3. Good design skills - not only do you notice the elements mentioned above, but you can also implement them well. Know and recognize game clichs.

4. Good writing skills - when not actually arguing and throwing feces at each other through our cage bars, a large portion of a game designer's job is design documentation or writing 5000 emails. That means you need good technical writing skills and an ability to organize your thoughts. You need to be able to pass a document off to audio, QA, marketing, the programming staff, and an artist, and they should be able to find out whatever information they need just by looking at the document.

If you want to prep for a job in the game design field, I'd suggest the following:

1. Play a lot of games and analyze what you like and don't like about them. If you interview for a game company, that'll always be part of the interview questions, and having smart answers ready beforehand helps them determine if you'll be a good developer or not.

2. You should play a lot of games, but just as importantly, watch a lot of other people play games. Pay attention to how the game is played, especially the interface and menus and the means by which the player interacts with the game. When you do, you’ll quickly start seeing what irritates players and what they enjoy - keep a running log in your head of successful ideas used in games and what made them work.

3. If a game comes with level or map editors, play around with them, try out levels or scenarios with your friends and use that as an acid test for your work. There are tons of editors out there, like the level editors for Quake, Starcraft, Warcraft, Arcanum, Neverwinter Nights, or any others you can get your hands on. Put your levels or mods up on the net, get critiques, and try to make a name for yourself as a good level or map designer before you even go to a game company - it helps when the interviewer's already seen your work on the internet and perhaps even played one of your levels.

4. Persistence and enthusiasm mean a lot in the game industry, so if you get knocked down once, just get back up and try again. You’ll get noticed.

5. If you're looking for college classes to take, I'd suggest some creative writing courses, maybe a little bit of programming and art, and any classes that deal with interface design or layout for computer programs. Learn how to write critically and technically, and become familiar with Microsoft Word.

6. A lot of designers did not start out as designers. If you want a door into the game industry, try manual writing, web design, quality assurance, or any of a bunch of other jobs in the game industry. Make your interest in becoming a designer known, and if you have the skills, somebody should give you a chance.
Hope that helps anyone out there, who's looking into this..

Interplay in trouble, Part IX: by Rosh - 5:44 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: Yahoo!
Spotted at V13 and RPGDot.

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Interplay Entertainment Corp.'s (IPLY) auditor has doubt about the company's ability to continue as a going concern, according to Interplay's annual report filed late Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ernst & Young LLP cites Interplay's recurring losses from operations and its stockholders' and working capital deficits as reasons for this doubt.

This is the first time Ernst & Young has audited Interplay's annual report. Last year's report was audited by Arthur Andersen LLP and didn't contain a statement doubting the company's going concern ability.

In the company's earnings press release on March 11 , Interplay said its ability to continue as a going concern depends on securing external sources of funding to continue operations.

For 2001, Interplay reported a loss from operations of $41.3 million compared with a loss from operations of $8.4 million for 2000.

New Static demo soon by Odin - 20:37 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: Static
William Fox (game developer/art director on Static) said on the Static boards that the new Static demo will probably be avaliable for you guys at the end of this week, read here what the man said:
We anticipate the current 3D version of Static to be available towards the end of this week. The version we could post now, would be quite a bit more frustrating.

As it stands, the missions and certain areas in the demo are purely placeholder, to test our current systems. Again- a work in progress.
Sounds good Bill! So remember to check that out guys!

Interplay selling Shiny by Odin - 16:41 - Comment Me (7) - News Source: Blue's News
I noticed over at Blue's News that Interplay are in "the advanced stages" of negotiation of the sale of Shiny. So it looks like Interplay is selling Shiny (with all it's upcoming titles) to get some quick cash into Interplay.

Static still on track by Odin - 10:14 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: Static
The website of Static the game has had a major replenish: new screenies, new info and here's their latest status:
With the GDC out of the way, and days upon days of all-nighters quickly being replenished, we are approaching a new phase of the project. We rushed hard to get a working version of Static up in time for IGF/GDC, which requires some finesse to play. Our goal is to work out bug fixes and gameplay tweaks, while looking for funding, or a publisher to continue with the project. We've gone pretty far with zero dollars and most of us negotiating the daily grind of a paying job.

Now's the time to keep grinding away.

The GDC demo is available in the downloads section. There are many bugs to be worked out still. You'll find plenty while playing which is one of the reasons behind putting up a forum. This build is only a snapshot of our current state. Most of the issues you see in this are already in our bugtracker, but feel free to post problems in the forums.

v025.01 is the first public version that has 3D implemented. We kept the prerendered background, as we don't think a low poly 3D version could come close to the level of detail invested into the environments. Since its inception, Static has gone through a lot of changes. Moving from 2D to 3D has been one of smarter moves. We are able to streamline the art pipeline, and do changes on the fly. We look forward to your opinions on all of it.

We are still working to implement a viable scripting engine, fonts that actually work (they're currently broken) and AI worth combatting.
Want more new info, get on over and check it out.

Fallout 2 sourcecode petition by Odin - 22:18 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: #Fallout on Gamesnet
Since Fallout 1 and 2 are quite old and it doesn't look like Interplay is ever going to use the code for it. The Fallout community have posted a petition, asking Interplay to release it to the public. So I ask everyone to sign this petition so we, the Fallout community, can make a new Fallout !!

Update: We actually seem to have some support for this, JE Sawyer of BIS posted this little baby:
I think it would be cool if we released the editors and/or source. I do know that there is licensed thirty party sound code in the Fallout and/or Fallout 2 engine, so that would have to be re-written or replaced. We have talked about the possibility in the past. Right now, the division is pretty busy working on IWD2 and/or Jefferson, though.
Could it be for real ? Or are the laywers going to rip us off ?

Wastes need faces by Odin - 18:40 - Comment Me (3) - News Source: The Wastes
Want your face in The Wastes (Fallout Half-Life mod)? Well now's your chance, Kruddman of the Wastes have requested pictures of your faces. Here's their requirements:
Send your entries here:
or contact me on ICQ: 84496066

Requirements: Over 18 years old. Mainly for cosmetic reasons. Image sizes must remain under 600kb if emailed. If you upload your face to a location and send the URL to me it can be any size you want.

I suggest zipping the image file so it can be larger size than file sent.

You may submit more than one image. Different facial expressions. In fact it'd be appreciated.
Well you won't see my pretty face in The Wastes, but you might want your face there ?

Killian 'fired' from DAC: by Rosh - 11:56 - Comment Me (3) - News Source: DAC
More details will be posted as they come in, but it seems that after finding that bit of news on the possible title of "Fallout Fantasy" as it was reported (sources mentioned in earlier news) and verifying through other sources, the powers that be at GameSpy decided to become a bit irked.

To the point of censoring and culling Killian from the DAC news staff, and apparently from the DAC staff entirely. I guess no matter if it is news or not, it must have an ample supply of arsekissing involved to suit the people at GameSpy.

As someone who worked at DAC about three years ago when it was at, I would recommend them to get off the Crash-Happy AOL of Gaming.

Feargus answers.. by Odin - 2:04 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: Bis Forum
After a much heated debate over this whole Fallout Fantasy thingie, Feargus posted this little comment:
So you are all aware. Neither Interplay nor Black Isle Studios has announced or distributed any information to the public concerning a title that has been called on a website Fallout Fantasy. Since that is the case most of the theories and guesses about such a game are being based purely off of other theories and guesses.
Would you believe it?....

Answers from BIS? by Odin - 21:52 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: Bis Forums
JE Sawyer posted a little respons to the discussion about this Fallout Fantasy project and without further ado:
We are announcing one external project at E3, the project which Feargus previously has called "Quincy". We are not the developers of that project. No, no, no.
Speculations on the board is plenty, but is seems all is agreeing with Saint (and so do I), that the Quincy project is a console game.

Fallout Fantasy ? by Odin - 21:48 - Comment Me (1) - News Source: Blues News
Evidently a new release schedule (from Virgin Interactive) was sent to Overgamer and it said that Black Isle is working on a title called "Fallout Fantasy", which is scheduled for a September 2002 release. Virgin Interactive refused to comment, but Overgamer suspects that this is the title for Fallout 3. This game will be shown on the E3 show next month, which would mean that this game would be the Quincy project that BIS is working on.

Update: According to an unnamed source at Inteplay:
  • This title is in development.
  • It uses the Dark Alliance engine
  • It's a console title (most likely PS2)
  • it's being developed by Digital Mayhem
  • And will most likely be an Action RPG
  • Thanks to Killian for informing me!

    Win98 Version of Mapper! by Rosh - 20:08 - Comment Me (0) - News Source: V13
At a Beta-release for testing, so there may be some problems running it, but TeamX have released it. Use at your own risk, but I would suggest giving it a try, as I'm about to do so in a little while. Send all feedback/bugs/complaints/nude photos (jk!) to them.

Local download from NMA pending, as per the other version, too.

Thanks again for this addition to the Fallout modding community, ApTyp and TeamX.

Happy Easter! by Rosh - 11:39 - Comment Me (5) - News Source:
In the spirit of the holiday, I've decided to add in a few more submitted Fallout 2 easter eggs. Some of which have been seen before, others perhaps not.

    They can be seen here.
