Guide: Critters

This document explains the PRO format file located in the Master.dat\Proto\Critters\ directory. These files sets the overall characteristics of each NPC that can be found in the game. There are skills such as lockpicking or science, basic stats such as strength, perception, or endurance. Hit points, carry weight are located here, too. In less words, you can modify every aspect of a Fallout critter here, except what they look like.

All the files have a total of 416 bytes and they're read in a Big Endian fashion [L] [H], like every PRO file in Fallout. The critter PRO files are compatible both in Fallout and Fallout 2, so, you can export your own critters either to Fallout 1 or Fallout 2.

This document is an updated version of the critter document made by Jaundice.

The reading structure is "4" & Body Type.
For example: in the PRO file you will see just 00 or 01 or 02. But to be able to handle messages, scripts, etc. You will have to do it in the "proto.msg" way. That is 00 = 400, 01 = 401, etc.

0194-197 4 --- The amount of experience you gain from slaying the critter.

The reading structure is "14" & (Body Type + 50).
Like above, it will only show 00, 01...10...15, etc. You have to sum that number by 50 and add a "14" to it.
For example: 00 = 1450, 15 = 1465, 10 = 1460, 5 = 1455, etc.

019C-19F Unknown
  • Extra stats can be interpreted like base stats modifiers. Attention! The real final stat will be (Base Stat)+(Extra Stat)=Real Stat.
  • All the stats have a limit, some of them are known, but it's recommended to not surpass the 999 limit (that is 0x03 0xE7).
  • Unkown offsets are just that, unknown. No changes were seen while heavily modified them.
